A blue tit builds a nest secret from the outside world in a tiny box 15cm x 25cm

#birds #birdsong Hidden inside a blue tit nest box is a tiny world, just 15cm by 25cm, a secret space where something remarkable is happening. I’ve placed a wildlife camera inside the box, giving me a rare glimpse into the private lives of these little birds. The female blue tit is busy building her nest, bringing in beakfuls of moss and carefully arranging it around the bottom of the box. She wriggles her body into the growing pile, turning and twisting as she shapes the moss into the perfect nest. It’s fascinating to watch her instinctively mould the material with her body, gradually creating the familiar cup shape that will eventually hold her eggs. Every so often the male appears, adding a little more nesting material before disappearing again. At one point, the female seems to suddenly have a piece of grass caught in her throat. She opens and closes her beak and makes an unusual movement that looks almost as though she is trying to dislodge something. But perhaps this isn't what it seems. Could it be an alarm display, a warning to something outside the box, or simply another part of her behaviour that we rarely get to witness? This is only the beginning. Inside this tiny 15cm by 25cm space, a whole new life is quietly taking shape, hidden from the world except for this small camera that gives us a glimpse into their secret lives.
