Tokari Geet is one of Assam’s ancient folk traditions, believed to have roots going back to the pre-Sanskrit era, when wisdom and traditions were passed down orally from generation to generation. The style takes its name from the tokari, a simple stringed instrument that accompanies the singing. These songs often narrate Hindu mythological tales, spiritual reflections, and philosophical thoughts on life, weaving together devotion and everyday human experiences. Tokari Geet is not only a form of music but also a living repository of Assam’s cultural memory and oral heritage. Indigenous art forms are the bed-rock of all contemporary performing arts, which includes dance, theatre, and music. Folk and traditional music have their own cultural history which is evolving with time, and also the roots of which are growing disengaged and ceasing to exist. It is also in tandem with climate change and the direct relation of art practices which are moving past community based approach, with no preservation efforts being considered.
