Saturday, 2PM. Tenjinbashisuji — Japan's second longest shopping street. From 6-chome in the north to 1-chome in the south, 2.6km. I skipped lunch on purpose and came with an empty stomach. The udon shop I was headed for was closed. That was stop one. Takoyaki instead: eight for ¥600 ($3.75), after waiting twenty minutes. Then a ramen shop I found while standing in that queue — ¥1,150 ($7.19). Two stops in, at 32, I was completely full. The croquette shop closed at 4PM. The rice ball shop, also closed. Things really don't go to plan. Four hours, and most of them were spent not eating. Looking for shops, finding them shut, walking on. But because they were closed, I walked. And because I walked, I stopped in front of an old tofu shop and bought a soy milk pudding. That turned out to be the best thing I ate all day. Do you plan your trips?
