Ronaldo vs Jorge Jesus: The Promise Behind the Portugal Walkout

Six days after he walked out of Portugal's camp, Cristiano Ronaldo published five pages. He says coach Jorge Jesus promised him 30 minutes against Norway and broke his word, then broke it again in a press conference. He apologises to the fans and his teammates, asks the federation to punish him, and says he isn't retiring. Here is the whole story, from both sides, checked against what the people involved really said. 0:00 Messi's farewell, Ronaldo's statement 0:52 Ten days in September 1:46 The press conference 3:04 Portugal without him 3:29 His side of the story 4:49 Sorry, and punish me 5:25 He almost stopped once already 6:17 Not the first time 7:17 What it would end 8:10 What to watch Sources (checked 6–7 Oct 2026): Ronaldo's statement, 6 Oct: full text, DAZN Portugal; English quotes as translated by ESPN; also Bolavip, Renascença, Observador Jorge Jesus's reply to it: Sábado, DN, A Bola, ESPN, 6 Oct 2026 Messi's farewell (Argentina 3-0 Benin, 6 Oct): AP via ABC News, CBC Timeline, Jesus's press conference, Ronaldo's Instagram statement, FPF statement: BBC Sport, 30 Sep 2026; Lusa via dnoticias.pt O Jogo's report: ojogo.pt, 30 Sep 2026 (its source is not named) Results and Group 4 table: UEFA match reports "Probably my last year of football": Vogue interview, via Reuters, 16 Aug 2026 Past disputes (2008, 2022): ESPN, 1 Oct 2026 234 caps, 146 goals: ESPN, AFP, Lusa. 979 career goals: ESPN goal tracker, Gulf News 2026 World Cup: AP, ESPN, FIFA Photos: Wikimedia Commons (CC BY, CC BY-SA).
