The bath is ready, and it stays ready all night.
The meal comes up to the room, at the hour named at the step.
Far Journeys is a side series from QUIET OUTPOST. One night in a far place, taken at its own speed, with no music in any part of it.
The valley road gave out some way below the inn. Snow covers the full width and the ditches at each side, and what remains of it is a shape lying under the level of everything else. The last stretch is walked, at dusk, in deep winter, with the trees standing well back and each branch carrying its own load.
The inn shows first as a single yellow lamp, set on a post at the turn of the way. Behind that lamp the timber building stands up two floors into the last blue of the evening, wide in the eaves, with lit paper at three or four of its upper windows. A short cloth hangs across the doorway, there is stone at the step and boards past the stone, and shoes are left at the side. The woman who runs the inn holds a hand toward the passage, and the traveller follows that up the stair.
His room is upstairs, second along the passage. Tatami underfoot, walls of pale plaster between dark posts, a shallow alcove with one cut branch standing in a jar, and a low table draped with a quilt above a charcoal box sunk in the floor. A tray waits on the table with a brown clay pot and a single cup. Behind the paper screen there is a small balcony, and behind that the snow, coming down straight and standing on every flat thing it meets.
Somewhere below and behind the building, water is going into water. It leaves the ground hot and arrives in a wooden tub along a length of bamboo, and it has been arriving at that same rate since long before he walked up. In the bath house it fills the whole room. Two floors up it thins to almost nothing. The water itself never changes. What changes is only the amount of building in the way.
The evening keeps to the speed of the place. Tea from the pot, and out of his own clothes into a yukata. Then cold boards along the passage, a stool and two pails and the washing that comes before the water, the tub taken twice over, and a small high window with the snow going past it. Later a tray arrives with rice, a bowl of soup, a piece of grilled fish, three kinds of pickle and one dish simmered a long time, with green tea before the meal and green tea after it.
About ninety minutes. Somebody is speaking through rather more than the first hour. Nobody speaks in the part that follows. What carries on is the inn itself, water dropping into the tub, an old building shifting once and then letting be, and the snow outside falling as it has fallen all evening. Nothing here is his to do. Every part of this building has already been seen to by other people, and his whole share in the night is to be inside it.
