In May 2007, a man in the Czech town of Kuřim turned on a new video baby monitor — and saw something he was never supposed to see.
What appeared on the screen would lead police to a house hiding a disturbing secret: two abused children, a mysterious teenage girl named Anička, multiple identities, and an investigation that eventually crossed international borders.
This is the Kuřim case — one of the strangest and least-known true crime cases to emerge from the Czech Republic.
As investigators followed the trail from the Czech Republic to Denmark and Norway, they discovered that the girl known as Anička was not who she claimed to be.
The person behind the identity was Barbora Škrlová, a 33-year-old woman who had also lived under another identity: Adam.
But the mystery went even deeper.
Who was "The Doctor"? Why were the children subjected to extreme control? And how did several adults become involved in a bizarre network of manipulation and deception?
This documentary reconstructs the Kuřim case, the investigation, the identities of Anička and Adam, the international search, the DNA revelation, and the eventual court case.
