Welcome to Büyükada, the largest and most beautiful of Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands. Just a short ferry ride from the city, Büyükada feels like a completely different world, offering peaceful streets lined with colorful bougainvillea, elegant historic mansions, beautiful seaside views, charming cafés, lively squares, and a relaxing island atmosphere. It is one of Istanbul’s most popular summer destinations, attracting both local and international visitors every year. The history of Büyükada dates back to the Byzantine Empire. The Princes’ Islands earned their name because Byzantine emperors often sent princes, princesses, nobles, and religious figures into exile on these islands. During this period, Büyükada became home to several monasteries and churches, many of which still reflect the island’s rich historical heritage. During the Ottoman era, Büyükada gradually transformed into a prestigious summer retreat. In the 19th century, with the introduction of regular ferry services, wealthy Ottoman families built magnificent wooden mansions that still decorate the island today. Greek, Armenian, Jewish, and Turkish communities lived together here, creating a unique multicultural atmosphere that continues to define Büyükada’s character. One of the island’s most famous landmarks is Aya Yorgi Church and Monastery, located at the highest point of Büyükada. Every year, thousands of visitors climb the hill to make wishes and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Marmara Sea. According to a long-standing local tradition, many visitors walk the path while holding a spool of thread as they make a wish, hoping it will come true. Büyükada is also known for its connection to Leon Trotsky, who lived on the island between 1929 and 1933 after being exiled from the Soviet Union. During his stay, he wrote several important works, making Büyükada a place of international historical significance. Today, Büyükada is one of Istanbul’s favorite destinations for a day trip. Visitors can stroll through the lively town center, enjoy delicious Turkish desserts and ice cream, relax at seaside cafés, admire beautiful historic villas, walk along the scenic coastline, and experience the island’s peaceful atmosphere. During the summer months, the island becomes vibrant and full of life, while its pine-covered roads and quiet corners still offer plenty of tranquility. Getting to Büyükada is easy and convenient. Regular ferries operate throughout the day from Kabataş, Kadıköy, Bostancı, Maltepe, and other piers across Istanbul. From Bostancı, the journey takes only about 30 minutes, making Büyükada one of the easiest and most enjoyable day trips from the city. Thanks to Istanbul’s excellent public transportation network—including the Metro, Marmaray, trams, buses, and ferries—you can easily reach the departure piers from almost anywhere in the city. One of the best things about Büyükada is that you can comfortably visit it in a single day. Frequent ferry departures make it easy to arrive in the morning, spend the day exploring the island, and return to Istanbul in the evening. In this walking tour, we explore Büyükada on a beautiful summer day, wandering through its colorful streets, lively town center, waterfront, cafés, local shops, and charming island atmosphere. Sit back, relax, and enjoy one of Istanbul’s most unforgettable destinations. If you’re planning a trip to Istanbul, Büyükada is a place you simply shouldn’t miss. #Büyükada #Istanbul #PrincesIslands #IstanbulWalkingTour #WalkingTour #Turkey #Türkiye #Travel #TravelTurkey #VisitIstanbul #IslandGetaway #SummerInTurkey #4K #4KWalkingTour #CityWalk #TravelGuide #MarmaraSea #ExploreTurkey #VirtualWalk #BeautifulDestinations
