Brahma-saṁhitā 5.37
Type: Lecture
Date: Aug. 11, 1971
Location: London
Speaker: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
What does it take to see Kṛṣṇa?
In this lecture on Brahma-saṁhitā 5.37, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa's pastimes in Goloka Vṛndāvana are ānanda-cinmaya-rasa, spiritual bliss, and are never material. He explains how Kṛṣṇa expands Himself, as when He expanded into all the cows, calves and cowherd boys after Brahmā stole them.
He gives the example of a mailbox in front of your door. It looks like a small box, but it is not different from the Post Office, since a letter dropped in it travels thousands of miles. In the same way, the Deity is Kṛṣṇa Himself, appearing to accept our humble service. Because stone, wood and brass are all Kṛṣṇa's energy, Kṛṣṇa can appear through them, just as electricity can be drawn from anywhere by one who knows the technique.
He then explains that the real technique is love of Godhead. Our loving propensity is misplaced on a dog instead of on God, and this is why we are unhappy. Like pouring water on the root of a tree rather than on a leaf, loving Kṛṣṇa lets love spread to everyone, including society, country, family and even the ant. Welfare work without Kṛṣṇa consciousness is pouring water on the leaf.
Finally, he reminds us that the simple method of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa is open to everyone, from the most erudite scholar to an innocent child. Just as fire burns whether a child or an adult touches it, everyone who offers obeisances, takes prasāda and joins the chanting is spiritually benefited.
May his words help us see Kṛṣṇa everywhere and place our love where it belongs.
Hare Kṛṣṇa
