What does life behind the music really look like—and does alcohol actually make artists more creative? In this episode of the Sober Life Rocks podcast, Laura Nelson sits down with Jake Jones, a former member of the rock band We As Human who went on to work as a producer and songwriter in Nashville and now works in film production and post-production. Jake shares what it was like to perform at legendary venues like Red Rocks while privately realizing that the future of his band was uncertain. From the audience, it looked like success. Backstage, the experience was far more complicated. Together, Laura and Jake explore what happens when the extraordinary becomes normal, why reaching the next level doesn’t always feel like enough and how quickly success can become the baseline for whatever we chase next. They also examine the long-standing relationship between alcohol and creativity. We often accept the image of the troubled, excessive and unpredictable artist as part of rock-and-roll culture. But does alcohol really fuel creativity—or can its immediate reward pull artists away from the more difficult work of pursuing a lyric, riff or idea? In this conversation: • Jake shares what life inside the music industry was really like • He reflects on performing at Red Rocks while his band was coming apart • Laura and Jake discuss the “never enough” side of success • They challenge the mythology of the tortured artist • Jake explains how alcohol affected his relationship with creativity • They explore losing and rediscovering a connection with music • Jake shares how making a sober choice changed his perspective • They examine alcohol’s role at networking and professional events • Laura asks what actually creates connection, belonging and memorable experiences • They discuss the difference between alcohol being present and alcohol becoming the activity Jake’s story invites us to examine the cultures we inherit and the assumptions we rarely stop to question. The cheering crowd isn’t necessarily the same thing as fulfillment. Chaos isn’t necessarily the source of creativity. Alcohol isn’t necessarily the source of connection. Watch the full conversation to hear Jake’s stories about rock-and-roll culture, sober choices, creativity, success and what he can see now from the other side of the stage.
