Now, Dave lives in Sussex, and he has recently been enlightening me about the county’s extraordinary enthusiasm for fireworks, fire and, naturally, Bonfire Night.
Apparently, this is all deeply rooted in centuries of religious history, local rebellion and a passionate attachment to the fundamental principle of individual freedom.
Or, as I prefer to interpret it, the good people of Sussex have discovered an entirely respectable historical justification for setting fire to things and making an almighty racket.
Yes, quite.
While the rest of us tend to mark November 5th with a packet of sparklers, a slightly disappointing Catherine wheel and perhaps a trip to the local recreation ground, Sussex takes a rather more committed approach.
It has something called Bonfire Season, which runs from September until late November and involves dozens of towns and villages apparently competing to see who can produce the most spectacular combination of flames, noise and general public disorder.
A gentle reminder: please keep your pets safely indoors on Guy Fawkes Night. The fireworks are frightfully unnecessary, if you ask me. I, for one, shall be retiring to the sofa, ears plugged, dignity intact, and refusing to entertain the whole business. Stay safe, everyone.
