Colonel Tom Byabagamba was laid to rest at Rusororo Cemetery in an emotional burial ceremony attended by his wife, two sons, relatives, close friends, and other mourners who gathered to bid him a final farewell. The ceremony was marked by profound grief. Tears flowed as those who knew Byabagamba watched his final journey come to an end and confronted the reality that a husband, father, brother, friend, and former senior military officer would not return home. His wife, Mary Baine, stood with their two sons during the final farewell. The family had already shared emotional memories of their life with Byabagamba, including their years together, the separation caused by his imprisonment, and the personal messages they said he had left behind. During earlier memorial events, Mary became overwhelmed with emotion while remembering her husband. Their sons also addressed mourners and read messages written by relatives and friends who could not attend. Brian, the elder son, struggled to hold back his grief while speaking about his father. Byabagamba was a veteran of the military struggle launched by the Rwanda Patriotic Front in 1990. He served in Paul Kagame’s personal protection detail and later commanded the Presidential Guard, the specialized military unit responsible for protecting the Head of State and key national installations. He subsequently served with a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan before being arrested in Rwanda in August 2014. Byabagamba was prosecuted alongside retired Brigadier General Frank Rusagara and retired Sergeant François Kabayiza. In March 2016, Rwanda’s Military High Court convicted him of several offences and sentenced him to 21 years in prison. He was also stripped of his military rank and decorations. In December 2019, the Court of Appeal upheld the conviction but reduced the sentence to 15 years. Colonel Tom Byabagamba died while imprisoned on August 25, 2026, at the age of 59, after approximately 12 years in detention. His elder brother, David Himbara, announced the death on behalf of the family. At the time this report was prepared, the precise medical cause and complete circumstances surrounding his death had not been officially established.
