The Psychology of Being Afraid of Dogs: Why Your Body Panics (and How to Retrain It)
A friendly golden retriever, a smiling owner, and your body sounds the alarm anyway. In this video, we break down the psychology of people who are terrified of dogs. Why some brains react to a bark with a panic attack, the three hidden reasons behind this fear, the heavy social price people pay for it, and three principles to slowly retrain your brain to feel safe again. We draw on John B. Watson’s Little Albert experiment, Albert Bandura’s observational learning, Dan Siegel’s “name it to tame it,” Joseph Wolpe’s graded exposure, and Charles Darwin’s work on the emotions. Then three tools to rewire the fear: name it to tame it, the ladder method, and learning the dog’s language.
Out of the three reasons, which one is yours: direct trauma, vicarious learning from a parent, or the fear of losing control? Tell me in the comments. I read them.
