IS JESUS REALLY THE MESSIAH? | A Greater Deliverer Than the Maccabees (John 10:22–30) Who is Jesus really—and what kind of Messiah did He come to be? During Hanukkah, the Jewish people celebrated a famous deliverer who defeated their enemies and restored the temple. Then Jesus stood in that very temple and confronted them with a much greater claim. In John 10, the religious leaders ask Jesus directly whether He is the Christ. Against the backdrop of Hanukkah and the story of Judas Maccabeus, Jesus reveals that His mission is far greater than another temporary political or military victory. He came to defeat humanity's greatest enemies: sin, Satan, and death. The Maccabees cleansed an altar; Jesus cleanses sinners. They restored sacrifices; Jesus became the final sacrifice. They rededicated the temple; Jesus is the true Temple.
