You Didn't Do Anything Wrong | The Good Samaritan

A man is left half dead on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. Two deeply religious men see him — and both cross to the other side. Neither one is cruel. Both have good reasons. That is exactly what makes this story so uncomfortable. Tonight we walk slowly through the parable of the Good Samaritan, and we stop where most retellings don't: with the two men who walked past. Why did they do it? Purity laws that cost them their week of service. The belief that someone else would come. Seeing a holier man pass first. Simple hurry. Quiet fear. And the last reason, the heaviest one — they broke no commandment at all. They simply did nothing. Then a Samaritan comes down the same road — a man from the one group this audience had been taught to despise — and gives away his oil, his wine, his animal, his money, his safety and his night for a stranger who would never be able to repay him.
