British Tourists Went Inside an American House… And Wanted to Move In

Most of these videos end with somebody laughing at America. This one doesn't. An American opens by inviting the British to come and live in his house, and the first thing he offers is a tap that does hot and cold at the same time. Not a pool. Not the square footage. A tap. And it works — because a Brit then lists the things in American houses that just make sense, and by the end of it he sounds like he's talking himself into moving. Waste disposal units in the sink, exactly like the films. Ice that comes out of the fridge door. A washing machine that lives in its own room and finishes in half an hour. But it goes both ways, and that's the half nobody shows. Halfway through, an American woman is shown a photograph of the water level in a British toilet and cannot get a sentence out. Nearly two million people watched her try. Because it turns out Europeans had seen a picture of an American toilet and couldn't understand why it's half full of water — and Americans then saw the British version and couldn't understand why it's nearly empty. Both sides assumed the other was doing something disgusting. Neither had thought about it once in their lives. Then there's the number that explains years of arguing. Ninety percent of American homes have air conditioning. In France it's about five. None of this is about money or size. It's taps, ceiling fans, postboxes, and where you keep the washing machine — small decisions made a century ago for reasons nobody alive remembers, that everybody now assumes are simply the natural order of things. And one man admits, without a trace of irony, that he is obsessed with American postboxes. Not the houses. Not the cars. The metal box on a stick at the end of somebody's drive.
