Her Search for Her Son Led to a $20,000 Online Relationship With a “Hacker”

Jane went online hoping to reconnect with the son she had lost contact with. Instead, her search led to a devastating $20,000 online scam. At 62, the Florida caregiver trusted a stranger claiming to be a professional hacker who could help locate her son. Over time, their conversations developed into a friendship, and he offered to help her purchase a Kia Soul through a supposed family connection. What followed was nearly three years of Apple and eBay gift-card payments, suspicious vehicle photographs, missing paperwork, and repeated delivery promises. The car never arrived. In this video, we examine how a mother's desperation to reconnect with her child became a prolonged financial trap, how a fake car deal exploited personal trust, and how the original investigators eventually uncovered inconsistencies in the online identity while helping Jane locate her son. *What this video adds:* A chronological breakdown of Jane's experience, from searching for her estranged son and trusting a supposed hacker to sending approximately $20,000 in gift cards for a Kia Soul that never arrived. Commentary on how friendship, emotional vulnerability, missing vehicle documents, and repeated promises kept Jane involved despite warning signs. An examination of the original investigators' findings, including an unverifiable dealership, suspicious transaction records, a tracking-link result associated with Abuja, Nigeria, and their successful effort to locate Jane's son. *Sources:* Original investigation and interviews: Catfished (Social Catfish) — Jane's case.    • Woman Sends $20,000 For Used Car... Or Rom...   *Credits:* The original investigation and interview footage are credited to Catfished (Social Catfish).
