Nobody Suspected Her After 5 Funerals in 2 Years. Until One Doctor Asked Why ---- Janie Lou Gibbs stood at the front pew of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cordele, Georgia five times in less than two years: for her husband Charles, her sons Marvin, Melvin and Roger, and her five-week-old grandson Ronnie. Every death had a different explanation, in a different hospital, from a different doctor. Liver disease. Hepatitis. A rare muscle disorder. After each funeral, she gave a share of the insurance money to the church. People called her a saint. She ran a daycare in her own home. Then, in October 1967, a doctor in Albany, Georgia watched a healthy nineteen-year-old father fade away nineteen days after his baby son, and refused to sign it off as bad luck. What the Georgia state crime laboratory found led to her arrest on Christmas Day 1967, her own birthday, to years in a state psychiatric hospital, and to a 1976 trial that ended with five life sentences. This is the true story of Janie Lou Gibbs, the church mother of Cordele, and the doctor who finally asked why. Illness, or greed?
