What if the promises of God had nothing to do with your performance? In Hebrews 10:15-18, the author quotes directly from Jeremiah 31 to show us something that changes everything about how we relate to God, our sin, and our identity. This is the New Covenant, and it is built entirely on what God says He will do.
Under the Old Covenant, the weight was on the people. Keep the law. Maintain the standard. Offer the sacrifice. But no one could do it perfectly, and that was the point. The New Covenant does not ask what you will do. It declares what God will do. He will write His laws on your heart. He will renew your mind from the inside out. And He will choose to remember your sins no more.
That last promise is one of the most misunderstood statements in all of Scripture. God is not forgetting in weakness. He is choosing in power. In His full omniscience, He still knows. But He makes a deliberate, legal, permanent decision never to bring those sins into the courtroom against you again. Micah 7 says He casts them into the depths of the sea. Psalm 103 says He removes them as far as the east is from the west. They are not temporarily covered. They are gone.
This message also tackles one of the biggest misunderstandings about grace: does forgiveness mean we can live however we want? Absolutely not. The New Covenant does not give us a license to sin. It gives us the power not to. Philippians 2:13 reminds us that God works in us both the desire and the ability to walk in what He has called us to.
And perhaps most powerfully, this message challenges the image many believers carry of God as a disappointed boss watching from heaven. Zephaniah 3:17 paints a completely different picture. God rejoices over His people with gladness. He quiets them with His love. He sings over them with joy. That is the God of the New Covenant.
Topics covered include the New Covenant vs. the Old Covenant, Hebrews 10 explained, Jeremiah 31 prophecy fulfilled, what it means that God remembers our sins no more, monergism and grace, how to walk in freedom from guilt and shame, and the truth about God's love for His people.
