Koto and shakuhachi music for deep meditation — a 3-hour zen mix from Tsukiyo Sounds. Played on the koto and the shakuhachi, the Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. Kami (神) is the Japanese word for the spirits that dwell in mountains, rivers and ancient trees. Tsukiyo (月夜) means "moonlit night". 🌙 Mix note: Seven pieces for one night deep in a Japanese cedar forest, before an ancient sacred tree wrapped in a thick straw rope hung with white paper streamers, with two old stone lanterns glowing at its roots, played on koto and shakuhachi. The evening opens with the koto at the foot of the great cedar and a shakuhachi answering from far away; as the night deepens the flute takes the lead while moonlight settles on the rope, and then the two trade phrases so slowly that each waits in silence before replying. At midnight a low warm drone holds the forest so still that not one needle stirs, the flute sinks into its softest low register with the koto answering only in rare soft harmonics, and the koto is left almost alone beside a single glowing lantern while the moon stands high above the dark crown of the tree. Before dawn the moon sinks behind the great cedar. In Japan, a very old tree in which a kami — a spirit of nature — is believed to dwell is called "goshinboku", and the straw rope (shimenawa) and the white paper (shide) mark it as a sacred place. Listen for the bell you never hear — at a Japanese shrine, visitors ring a bell before they bow, and not one bell is in this mix. No wind, no rustling leaves, no creaking branches, no owls, no insects, no bird calls, no water, no footsteps, no singing bowls, no court music and no chanting — only the breath at the head of each flute phrase, which is part of the instrument, and we did not clean it away. Press play, sit quietly, and let the forest keep the silence with you. 🌙Tsukiyo Sounds is a hand-curated library of Japanese zen music — koto, shakuhachi and soft ambience for deep sleep, meditation and quiet nights.
