Shakuhachi music for deep sleep — a 3-hour zen mix from Tsukiyo Sounds. Played on the shakuhachi, the Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. Tsukiyo (月夜) means "moonlit night" in Japanese. 🌙 Mix note: Seven pieces for one night under an old ginkgo tree in late autumn, the ground from its roots out into the dark buried under fallen golden leaves that hold the moonlight, played on a single shakuhachi. The evening opens with low breathy tones and long meri-kari bends, each phrase followed by a pause; as the night deepens the air goes completely still and the flute drops into its softest low register. At midnight the tone thins to almost breath alone over a low warm drone, a distant koto places one plucked note far behind the trunk, and the last hours are left with the gold lying on the ground and nothing else. Before dawn not one leaf has moved. Listen for the breath at the head of each phrase — it is part of the instrument, and we did not clean it away. A carpet of fallen leaves usually comes with wind; this night has none.
