Improvisation doesn’t have to begin with trying to invent a completely new solo. In this lesson, I use My Shining Hour to show how you can start with a melody you already know and gradually move from the theme into your own improvisation. We’ll begin by playing the melody, then explore how to improvise over just 4 bars at a time, listening and developing simple musical ideas before moving on to the whole form. At the end, I’ll improvise over two full choruses so you can hear how these small ideas can grow into a complete solo. 🎻 In this lesson: • Start with the melody • Practice improvising over 4-bar sections • Listen and respond instead of trying to play too much • Gradually move away from the theme • Build toward improvising over the whole tune I’ll also post 4-bar practice loops so you can practice these ideas with me and on your own. Listen first. Let your fingers follow your ears.
