Bill Gates says to prepare for 20 years of tumultuous AI disruption

My guest today is Bill Gates, co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft and chairman of the Gates Foundation. You may have noticed Bill in the news more lately — he’s been on something of a tour for the past few months talking about AI risk, and how crucial it is that we start taking this seriously. So I was excited to sit down with him and really dig into this subject. I came with many questions, about AI policy, the technical aspects of alignment, and what it means for future generations that we’re building something this disruptive and potentially dangerous. #ai #tech #microsoft #billgates 0:00 Cold Open 0:50 Welcome To Decoder 1:07 Why AI Urgency Is Real 5:44 Most Dangerous Tech Ever Invented 7:58 Lost Corporate Ideals 9:56 Government Regulation 10:53 AGI & Consciousness 14:03 Solving The Control Problem 16:57 "I'm Not A Doomer" 18:04 Accelerationists vs. Safety 21:07 Alignment & Anthropic's Constitution 24:07 Three Approaches To Alignment 25:23 Microsoft's Security Layer 28:23 Should We Slow Down? 29:40 Politics & Data Centers 34:57 Job Market Disruption 38:39 What’s Left For Humans? 39:46 Abundance & The 20-Year Transition 45:39 Gates Foundation & AI In Healthcare 50:03 International Response & Nuclear Comparison 53:17 Open Source & Regulation 59:18 Institutional Trust 1:01:35 Why Trust Bill Gates? 1:04:20 US vs. China On AI 1:06:03 Will It Take Something Bad? 1:06:52 Young People & Nihilism 1:10:36 Closing Subscribe: http://goo.gl/G5RXGs Like The Verge on Facebook: https://goo.gl/2P1aGc Follow on Twitter: https://goo.gl/XTWX61 Follow on Instagram: https://goo.gl/7ZeLvX Follow on TikTok: http://bit.ly/42VeCVU Watch The Vergecast on YouTube: https://bit.ly/40RFRkg The Vergecast Podcast: https://bit.ly/3WQDexZ Decoder with Nilay Patel: http://apple.co/3v29nDc More about our podcasts: https://www.theverge.com/podcasts Read More: http://www.theverge.com Community guidelines: http://bit.ly/2D0hlAv Wallpapers from The Verge: https://bit.ly/2xQXYJr Shop our Verge merch store here: https://bit.ly/4kPCmEc If you buy something from a Verge link, Vox Media may receive a commission without exerting any influence on editorial content.
