People Behind FHTS | Dr. Upma Sharma

Meet Dr. Upma Sharma, a Public Health Researcher at FHTS, New Delhi, who holds a PhD from the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (ICMR), Noida. Her doctoral research focused on oral squamous cell carcinoma, exploring the role of immunomodulatory genes and HPV and EBV infections in the development of the disease. During her research, she identified three novel genetic variations that were globally recognised and registered in the GenBank database. Dr. Upma presented her research at the World Cancer Congress in France and published her findings in the international journal Cytokine. Her research journey also led to a postdoctoral fellowship from ICMR. Moving from molecular biology to public health, Dr. Upma recognised that improving population health requires translating scientific findings into meaningful interventions beyond the laboratory. At FHTS, she now works across non-communicable diseases, community-based and implementation research, and academics. She credits the mentorship of Dr. Ashish Joshi for helping her strengthen her leadership, communication, and decision-making skills and for shaping her journey as a public health professional.
