Ohio became the 17th state in 1803, and after previous capitals in Chillicothe and Zanesville, Columbus was selected as the permanent capital in 1812. Construction began in 1839 and took 22 years, with political disputes, financial difficulties, and fires delaying completion until 1861. Inside, visitors can explore historical exhibits, Ohio’s original and revised constitutions, legislative chambers, Civil War displays, and the rotunda where Abraham Lincoln’s body lay in state.
