In late 1966, American pilots over North Vietnam were losing the air war to the agile MiG-21, and Colonel Robin Olds saw why: bombing missions flew identical routes at identical times, letting North Vietnamese ground controllers vector MiGs into perfect ambush positions. His answer was a deception. F-4 Phantoms of Ubon's 8th Tactical Fighter Wing would imitate F-105 Thunderchiefs, carrying the same radar jamming pods, radio frequencies, and rigid formations, but armed for air-to-air combat instead of bombing.
Operation Bolo, flown on January 2, 1967, turned that disguise into a trap. This documentary examines the planning, the technical problems, and the twelve minutes of combat that followed.
Editorial note: This documentary features independently written narration and analysis. Selected archival footage excerpts provide visual context for the aircraft, missions, engineering decisions, and historical events examined.
