Getting down to the river meant scaling sheer rock faces, battling loose dirt, and climbing up and down steep hills where one wrong step could spell disaster. ​But the sweat paid off. Working against the clock in the bottom of a steep canyon means night falls fast. What followed was a terrifying, pitch-black hike out, navigating boulder fields, thick brush, and steep ridges entirely by flashlight and memory.
