I crossed from Iran into Iraq during Arba'in and traveled from the Mehran border toward Najaf — not as a pilgrim, but as a traveler documenting what I saw along the way.
The journey took me through intense summer heat, border crossings, roadside food, free tea and drinks, and countless moments of hospitality.
Along the road, I saw children cooling travelers with water, people preparing food for those passing through, and volunteers helping visitors find food and a place to rest.
In Najaf, I explored the traditional covered market, where I found fabrics, traditional clothing, incense, prayer beads, clay prayer stones, sweets, copperwork, and many other local goods.
Then I headed toward Wadi Al-Salam — the vast historic cemetery of Najaf, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest cemetery.
Inside Wadi Al-Salam, I explored its maze of graves, colorful domes, inscriptions, underground burial vaults, and the shrine traditionally associated with Prophets Hud and Salih.
I also witnessed pilgrims praying, resting, and continuing their journey through this extraordinary landscape.
UNESCO describes Wadi Al-Salam as one of the world's largest cemeteries and notes that burial there has continued for more than 1,400 years. UNESCO has also recognized the provision of services and hospitality during the Arba'in visitation as part of Iraq's intangible cultural heritage.
And then, at a nighttime stop, something completely unexpected happened.
A little Iraqi girl pointed toward the chicken kebab and said something to me in Arabic.
I couldn't understand her.
If you speak Arabic, can you tell me what she said?
