Hidden in the historic heart of Baghdad stands the Mosque and Mausoleum of Umar al-Suhrawardi, a remarkable site connected to one of the most influential Sufi masters of medieval Iraq. Umar al-Suhrawardi was a renowned 13th-century Sufi scholar, jurist and mystic, and one of the key figures in the Suhrawardiyya tradition. His famous work, Awārīf al-Maʿārif, became an influential guide to Sufi practice and spiritual life. But the most striking part of this historic site may be outside the mosque. Inside the surrounding cemetery rises a remarkable conical muqarnas dome. The structure was renewed in 735 AH, corresponding to 1334–1335 CE, and its unusual design has been compared with the conical dome of Ezekiel’s Tomb in Babylon. In this video, I explore the mosque, its architecture, the historic cemetery, and the extraordinary dome that has survived for more than seven centuries.
