The RAF Officer Who Escaped 13 Times, Even From Sachsenhausen — The True Story of Jimmy James

Most such citations describe a single act of courage. This one reads like a list — a tunnel on the Baltic coast, a cow shed, a mass breakout, and finally a tunnel dug out from under his own bed with a table knife. Almost every line ends the same way: he was caught, put in a cell, and when he came out, he started again. His friends called him Jimmy. Over nearly five years as a prisoner of war, he made thirteen attempts to escape — and he was one of the 76 who crawled out of the Great Escape.
