In the spring of 1945, an American pilot left a note at a German farmhouse, asking whichever Allied soldier reached the woman inside first to treat her kindly. Then he climbed into the cockpit of a Focke-Wulf 190 he had never flown, with no parachute, no map, and every gun on his own side of the line watching for an aircraft exactly like it. His name was Bob Hoover, later called the greatest stick-and-rudder pilot who ever lived. He called this flight about the dumbest thing he ever did. This is how a grocery boy from Nashville flew home in an enemy plane.
