When I was 17, I thought confidence could cover for a lack of substance. I learned otherwise during a high school debate tournament when I stood in front of a room and confidently gave a speech about nuclear energy without actually knowing what nuclear energy was. I had the delivery. I had the confidence. I had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Years later, I can see how easily that same mistake can show up in our faith. We can learn how to sound right, talk right, quote Scripture and look the part without allowing the Word of God to actually change the way we live.
In this message from James 1:19–27, I unpack James’ challenge to be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger, and why he tells us to become doers of the Word rather than hearers only. We talk about anger as a warning light, learning to listen longer, looking deeply into Scripture instead of glancing at it, and what it means to let the implanted Word transform our everyday lives. Real faith shows up on Monday, in our conversations, relationships, reactions, choices and in the way we love people who may never be able to give us anything in return.
My challenge is simple: listen longer, look longer and live louder. God is not asking us to manufacture a Christian performance or earn His love through good works. His grace comes first, and that grace gives us the power to actually live differently. My prayer is that we would stop settling for the appearance of faith and allow Jesus, His Word and the Holy Spirit to produce something real in us.
