The Pennsylvania Railroad S1 #6100 was one of the most ambitious steam locomotives ever built in the United States.
Designed as a high-speed experiment, it was enormous, powerful, technically advanced, and yet the railroad never built a second one.
In this episode of Railroad Autopsy, we examine what the S1 was built to prove, how its duplex design worked, how it performed in real service, the operational compromises created by its size, and why this extraordinary locomotive ultimately remained a one-off experiment.
We also look at the famous speed claims surrounding the S1, the Crestline turntable problem, its unusual weight distribution, and the transition toward the later PRR T1 and diesel power.
Railroad Autopsy is a documentary channel dedicated to railroad history, forgotten machines, engineering decisions, abandoned technologies, and the stories behind ambitious ideas that did not always become the future.
Production & Research
Each episode is developed from historical research using archival records, railroad publications, technical references, museum and historical society resources, and other documented sources.
The script is structured to make complex railroad history and engineering understandable to a broad audience while clearly distinguishing documented facts, reported claims, and historical uncertainty.
Visual Production
Episodes combine archival photographs, historical footage, maps, technical diagrams, period documents, and carefully created supporting visuals to explain the engineering and historical context of each story.
Narration
Narration is produced specifically for each documentary to provide a clear, consistent storytelling experience.
