There's a can of soup with a green heart on the front. Heart healthy. Fifty percent less fat. Fifty percent less sodium. And under all of that, the name. Cream of mushroom. Turn it over, and one line sits in the ingredients: "Contains less than 2% of." The very next word is cream.
In this video we read the front, the ingredient list and the line on 7 canned soups, counting down from a bunny-label organic can to a heart on a red-and-white can: #7 Annie's Organic Chicken Noodle, #6 Progresso Traditional Chicken Noodle, #5 Progresso Vegetable Classics Creamy Mushroom, #4 Campbell's Chunky Classic Chicken Noodle, #3 Campbell's Condensed Chicken Noodle, #2 Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom and #1 Campbell's Condensed Heart Healthy Cream of Mushroom. Along the way we keep a count: how many of these cans does one company own?
#7 Annie's: organic on the front, five ingredients above the line and seventeen behind it.
#6 Progresso Traditional: five above, nineteen behind, and a per-can sodium number printed on the label.
#5 Progresso Creamy Mushroom: "creamy" on the front, cream behind the line.
#4 Campbell's Chunky: five above, twenty behind, and two columns on the nutrition panel.
#3 Campbell's Condensed Chicken Noodle: three above the line, sixteen behind.
#2 Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom: no line on this can, and cream is seventh of thirteen.
#1 Campbell's Heart Healthy Cream of Mushroom: the front keeps its promise, and cream moves behind the line.
We also look at what the federal rule says about the "Contains less than 2% of" line and how a per-serving number compares with the whole can.
Then we show you two picks where the front and the back tell the same story: Amy's Organic Chunky Tomato Bisque and Pacific Foods Organic Cream of Mushroom. Each one has an honest downside, and we tell you what it is. One of them comes with a twist.
The rule: find the big word on the front, then turn the can over and find that word on the back. Look for "Contains less than 2% of." Turn it over. Read the first line. And if it doesn't match the front… put it back.
