What Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Can Teach Us Today

Saint of the Day: Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, Jesuit 🕯️ Today we honor Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (1568–1591), the patron saint of youth. Born on March 9, 1568, in Castiglione delle Stiviere, Italy, he was the firstborn son of a noble family — his father was a marquis who dreamed of making him a soldier and prince. From an early age, however, Aloysius was drawn to God. At age 7, he made a vow of perpetual virginity and devoted himself to prayer and penance. He received his First Communion at age 12 and felt called to religious life, but his father opposed it for years. After much resistance, his father consented, and Aloysius renounced his inheritance and entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1585. He studied under Saint Robert Bellarmine and lived a life of extraordinary purity, humility, and penance. In 1591, a terrible plague struck Rome, and Aloysius, though weak, devoted himself to caring for the sick in the hospitals. He contracted the plague himself and died on June 21, 1591, at just 23 years old, with the name of Jesus on his lips. He was canonized in 1726 and declared patron of youth by Pope Benedict XIII. A moment of prayer: "Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, young and faithful servant of God, who gave up privilege and wealth to follow Christ with heroic purity and gave your life caring for the sick, intercede for us. Obtain for us the grace of a pure heart, the courage to follow God's call, and the charity to serve others with selfless love.
