Saint of the Day: Saint Zita of Lucca, Virgin 🕯️ Today we honor Saint Zita of Lucca (c. 1212–1272), the patron saint of domestic workers and servants. Born into a poor but devout family in Monte Sagrati, near Lucca, Italy, she was taught by her mother to seek God's will in all things. At the age of 12, she was sent to work as a servant in the household of the wealthy Fatinelli family in Lucca — where she served faithfully for the rest of her life, about 48 years. Though she was often overworked, mocked, and ill-treated by fellow servants who envied her goodness, she responded with patience, gentleness, and humility. She attended Mass daily, prayed constantly, gave generously to the poor — even sharing her own food with the hungry — and worked so diligently that her household flourished. Many miracles are attributed to her, including the miraculous baking of bread while she was at prayer. She died on April 27, 1272, and her body rests in the Basilica of San Frediano in Lucca, where she is venerated to this day. She was canonized in 1696. A moment of prayer: "Saint Zita of Lucca, humble servant and faithful handmaid of God, who sanctified your daily work through patience, prayer, and charity, intercede for us. Obtain for us the grace to serve God in all we do, the strength to bear injustice with humility, and the love to see Christ in the poor and in our daily duties.
