Sambalpur, one of the most important cities of Western Odisha, is home to an engineering marvel, a revered goddess and a wilderness few travellers know about. In this Khabargaon documentary, we travel across Sambalpur to see what makes this city on the banks of the Mahanadi so special. We begin at the Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world. Its main dam stretches 4.8 km, and with its dykes the total length is about 25.8 km. Planned decades before Independence and inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1957, Hirakud changed the story of this region. From the top of Gandhi Minar, we take in the vast Hirakud reservoir. Next, we visit the Maa Samaleswari Temple, the presiding deity of Sambalpur and the heart of Western Odisha's faith, and walk through its new temple corridor. Here we also run into Union Education Minister and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan, who shares what Maa Samaleswari means to the people of this region. We then sit down for a traditional Sambalpuri meal served on leaf plates, before heading into the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary on the edge of the Hirakud reservoir. We go on a boat ride with forest staff and a jungle safari, and see the salt licks built for wild animals. Debrigarh is home to the Indian Gaur (bison), sambar, peafowl and around 200 species of birds.
