Château de Fénelon, Dramatic Fortress in Dordogne, France

Château de Fénelon occupies a rocky promontory, surrounded by a triple wall and terraces, above the village of Saint Mondane, southeast of Sarlat. The castle dates from the 13th century, but most of what remains was rebuilt in the 16th century. The castle was a Cathare stronghold during the 12 and 13th centuries and it went on to play a strategic role during the Hundred Years War. The current owners have carefully maintained the chateau, and furnished several of the rooms with authentic, characteristic items. Visitors are graciously invited.
