What happens when a country’s powerful automotive industry decides there may be no room for you?
In the early 1960s, Soichiro Honda had already built a successful motorcycle company. But his ambitions went far beyond two wheels. As Japan’s automobile industry grew, government officials considered policies that could have made it much harder for smaller manufacturers to compete with established carmakers.
Honda was facing a challenge that money, reputation and past success could not automatically solve. He had to prove that his company belonged in the car business — and he had very little time to do it.
Then came the deadline, the controversy over a red sports car, and a confrontation that raised a bigger question: could one determined entrepreneur challenge the direction of an entire industry?
Watch until the end to see how the early struggle fits into the larger story of Honda — and why this chapter matters when understanding the company it eventually became.
