You are eleven hundred feet of black steel pipe, and you're about to spend twenty years waiting for a fire that may never come. The waiting is what kills you. This is the life of a dry pipe fire sprinkler system, told from the inside, year by year. You get built on a deliberate slope so winter can't split you open — and being dry is exactly what destroys you. On day one, a gallon of water fails to drain from a low spot. Compressed air sits on top of it, air is twenty-one percent oxygen, and steel wants that oxygen badly. Black steel on compressed air: a service life of about twenty years.
