Ibiza resident John Truelove joined us back in April at IMS ibiza to reflect on a remarkable journey through dance music - from the early days of the M25 orbital rave scene to creating one of the most enduring anthems in club culture 'You Got the Love'. John first discovered Ibiza in 1991, having already experienced the Summer of Love and the rave scene in Britain. He recalls the freedom of arriving on an island where the parties never seemed to stop, and how Ibiza quickly became somewhere he felt completely at home. After years of visiting, he finally made the move in 2008. The conversation takes us behind the story of 'You Got the Love' - how a studio experiment combining the Candi Staton vocal with Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's 'Your Love' became a record that would define an era. John explains how he pressed the first white labels, drove around the UK delivering records to independent shops himself, and worked to secure the permissions needed for an official release. The track reached No. 4 in the UK charts in 1991, before John revisited it with the 1997 version, which went on to enjoy a remarkable second life, including a later note-for-note cover by Florence + The Machine. John also discusses the less visible side of the music business. Through Truelove Music Publishing, he works with producers, composers and songwriters to protect their rights, register their music and collect royalties from the many different sources where their work is played. He explains why music publishing matters, how artists can lose control of their compositions, and why understanding the business behind the music is as important as making it. There are plenty of reflections on Ibiza, too — from the island’s 24-hour clubbing culture and the legendary after-parties to how the scene has changed, the growth of daytime events and the different experiences Ibiza now offers. Filmed at IMS Ibiza @ Hyde Ibiza Presented by Alan Warman and Clara Griffin. Cameraman Darren Griffin. Edited by Billy Booth. Produced by Dave Lambert. Follow/subscribe to never miss an episode.
