According to a new study released by the prominent research institute ODI Global on October 16, 2026, when this strict law becomes fully operational, up to 60 percent of smallholder Ethiopian coffee farmers could be completely excluded from the major European market. With about 30 percent of Ethiopia's total coffee exports heading to Europe, this new regulatory framework will place immense pressure on the country's macroeconomy, foreign exchange earnings, bank credit availability, and the daily livelihoods of millions of rural citizens. The study revealed that currently, more than half—57 percent—of Ethiopia’s coffee supply chain has traceability and identification gaps regarding the exact origin of production. The new regulation requires that only coffee produced on land not deforested after December 31, 2020, may be imported, forcing farmers to provide accurate geolocation or GPS data showing their farmland. The study indicates that currently, only a very small number of producers are able to meet this complex requirement. In our special business synthesis on today’s Gebeya Media, we explore in detail the nature of the European Union regulation, its direct damage to Ethiopian coffee production, the economic downturns these strict laws could trigger, the country’s level of preparedness, the experiences of other countries, and urgent measures expected from stakeholders.
