How should we respond when God makes His presence known? In Exodus 3:1–22, Moses experiences one extraordinary day that changes the direction of his life. God appears in a burning bush and calls Moses by name. This encounter shows us three ways to respond when God shows up. First, we should be captivated by God’s holy presence. The bush burns without being consumed because God is self-sustaining and completely set apart. Moses removes his sandals and hides his face in reverence. God’s holiness deserves our complete attention and awe. Second, we should be comforted by God’s compassionate plan. God has seen Israel’s suffering, heard the people’s cries, and come down to deliver them. He has a purpose for His people and invites Moses to participate in that plan. God still calls His people to join His work and help others draw closer to Him. Third, we should be confident in God’s promises. Moses feels inadequate, but God promises to be with him. God also promises Israel’s deliverance, provision, unity, and victory over Pharaoh. The strongest promise is God Himself: “I Am Who I Am.” Jesus later identifies Himself with this eternal name and promises to remain with His followers. God continues to make His presence known through worship, His Word, and His work in the world. When He does, we are called to respond with awe, obedience, and trust. Main Passage: Exodus 3:1–22 Big Idea: When God shows up, we should be captivated by His presence, comforted by His plan, and confident in His promises.
