In 2005 a crew tunnelled 78 metres under a Brazilian avenue into the Central Bank in Fortaleza and took 3.5 tonnes of cash without tripping a single alarm.
This is the Banco Central de Fortaleza burglary, the largest bank theft in Brazil's history: about R$164.8 million (roughly US$70 million at the time) in used fifty-real notes whose serial numbers, according to reporting at the time, had never been recorded.
We walk through the plan step by step: the rented house a block from the bank, the synthetic-grass company used as a cover, a lit and air-conditioned tunnel shored with wood, and the weekend of 6 and 7 August 2005 when the vault floor was opened from below.
Then the turn. The money could not be traced, but the people carrying it could. Within days, a batch of cars bought in cash and a truck stopped in Minas Gerais gave the Federal Police their first thread. No crew members are named here: roles are described as the court record and major reporting support.
