Mount Rushmore is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States — but its story took years to carve into stone. The idea began in 1923. Actual carving started on October 4, 1927, under sculptor Gutzon Borglum. George Washington was dedicated in 1930. Thomas Jefferson followed in 1936. Abraham Lincoln in 1937. Theodore Roosevelt in 1939. After Gutzon Borglum died in March 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum continued the work. The final drilling ended on October 31, 1941. Nearly 400 workers helped create the monument using drills, cables, and dynamite — and no workers died during the carving process. Today, the faces of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln still look out across the Black Hills of South Dakota. Would you visit Mount Rushmore?
