Caleb Flynn admitted he has lied about a lot of things, then told the court he did not kill his wife. His own daughter's letter asked him to tell everyone he did it.
This is THE STAGED SCENE, our name for the State of Ohio versus Caleb Flynn, the Miami County case over the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, the mother of their two daughters. A jury found him guilty on all nine counts, aggravated murder first among them. This sentencing hearing is the first time Flynn spoke for himself, the day Ashley's family spoke to his face, and the day Judge Jeannine N. Pratt decided the rest of his life.
These are the five moments of that hearing, in the order they happened, each with enough of its run-up to land. If you want every statement and every word of the sentence, the whole hearing runs uncut in Case Story Part 45: • Staged Scene Sentencing: Caleb Flynn Denie...
Put #1 next to #4 and you have the question this hearing leaves behind. Flynn says that before God he is not lying, and he promises to keep fighting for his innocence. Judge Pratt finds no genuine remorse, counts his clean adult record in his favor, then calls him the highest risk to the public. Can a man who still says he is innocent ever show the remorse a sentencing court weighs? Should it count against him when he can't? Watch both and tell me what you think the court was weighing.

KEY MOMENTS (THE TOP 5)
0:00 What this video is, and a preview
0:20 Intro
1:20 Video starts: #1 Flynn admits he has lied about a lot of things, then says he did not kill his wife
Why it made the five: it is the one time Flynn speaks for himself in this case. He thanks the family raising his girls, says he is most ashamed of what he said about Ashley, and denies the killing. Everything after this answers him.
3:59 #2 Kayla Keyt tells Flynn what he took, what he could not take, and forgives him
Why it made the five: Ashley's sister, now raising Ashley's girls with her husband Matthew, asks him for nothing. She forgives him because she refuses to let hatred take another part of her life, and it is the hardest thing said in that room.
6:31 #3 Alyssa's letter: "The least you could do is tell everyone you did it"
Why it made the five: minutes after her father's denial, his daughter's letter, read by her grandmother Jill Smith, answers it head on. She tells him she does not plan on coming to see him.
8:58 #4 Judge Pratt finds no genuine remorse and reads Flynn his daughter's question
Why it made the five: this is the reasoning behind the sentence. Watch her weigh his record for him, then find a position of trust, children a few feet away and "the highest risk," and close on a question she says the court cannot answer.
14:00 #5 Life without parole, with 7 and then 9 years served first
Why it made the five: the sentence, built count by count. The specification terms, then three tampering counts run consecutive, and only then the life term. Listen for how many years come before life even begins.
17:42 Where to watch the whole sentencing hearing uncut
