For most of human history, menopause looked like an evolutionary mystery.
Almost every female mammal keeps reproducing until late in life. So why would human women stop reproducing decades before the end of their lives?
And here's where things get even stranger: humans aren't completely alone.
Menopause has been documented in a tiny number of toothed whales, including orcas, and a 2023 study of wild chimpanzees at Ngogo in Uganda's Kibale National Park added another surprising piece to the puzzle.
So why does menopause exist at all?
This video explores the grandmother hypothesis, the reproductive conflict hypothesis, and the evolutionary mathematics behind kinship, cooperation, and reproduction. We'll look at why human children remain dependent for so long, why older females may benefit their genes by helping existing descendants, and why orca research provides some of the strongest evidence for the idea.
Then comes the chimpanzee twist.
The Ngogo chimpanzee population suggests that menopause may not be an exclusively human phenomenon after all. Instead, it may be a rare evolutionary solution that appears when long lifespans, tight social groups, and specific patterns of who stays and who leaves come together.
The deeper question isn't simply “Why do humans have menopause?”
It's:
Why does evolution sometimes favor stopping reproduction and helping the family you already have?
