In Loving Memory of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great December 5th 1926 October 13th 2016 ---------------------------------- Royal Anthem of Thailand- สรรเสริญพระบารมี [Sansoen Phra Barami | Glorify His Prestige] ----------------------- สรรเสริญพระบารมี [Sansoen Phra Barami | Glorify His Prestige] Composer: Pyotr Schurovsky (Russian composer) Lyrics: Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong (Revised later by King Rama VI) Lyrics: King Vajiravudh (Rama VI, 1913 Revision) Current Status: Official Royal Anthem of the Kingdom of Thailand Primary Role: An acoustic symbol of the Monarchy, played to honor the King. ------------------- By the late 1880s, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) sought a definitive musical masterpiece that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the grand anthems of the European Empires. While "Bulan Loi Luean" was a step toward independence, its traditional Thai structure was difficult for Western ears to categorize as a "standard" anthem. The King desired a composition that utilized Western polyphony and grand orchestration to signal Siam’s absolute modernization and its status as an uncolonized, sophisticated power. The melody we recognize today was born from a unique diplomatic exchange. Around 1888, the Russian composer Pyotr Schurovsky composed the music and dedicated it to King Chulalongkorn as a gesture of friendship between the Romanov and Chakri dynasties. While several Western musicians in the Siamese court—including the Dutch bandmaster Eduard Heutze and the Italian Fusco—had submitted arrangements or variations, Schurovsky’s composition was favored for its majestic, swelling crescendos and its ability to evoke a sense of sacred awe. The King awarded Schurovsky a silver cigarette case as a token of gratitude for a melody that would define the Siamese state for generations. The profound lyrics were penned by Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong, the "Great Craftsman of Siam." His verses utilized the most elegant Rachasap (Royal Language), drawing from Pali and Sanskrit roots to create a prayer-like atmosphere. The lyrics were later slightly polished by King Rama VI (Vajiravudh) in 1913 to the version still used today. The anthem was more than a song; it was a religious and civic oath. It describes the King as the "Protector of the Buddhist Faith" and the "Supreme Sovereign" whose merit (Barami) ensures the happiness and security of the people. During the era of the Absolute Monarchy, there was no distinction between the "State" and the "Monarch." Therefore, Sansoen Phra Barami served as the National Anthem of Siam. By the year 1932 marked the most significant turning point in the history of "Sansoen Phra Barami." Following the Siamese Revolution, which transitioned the nation from an Absolute Monarchy to a Constitutional Monarchy, the newly formed government (the Khana Ratsadon) sought to distinguish the State from the Monarch. While the song had functioned as the de facto National Anthem for 44 years, it was officially stripped of its "National" status in favor of the new Phleng Chat (National Anthem). However, "Sansoen Phra Barami" was not discarded; it was re-established as the Royal Anthem of Thailand, reserved specifically for the glorification of the King and the Chakri Dynasty. ---------------------------- #ไทย #สยาม #กรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ #กรุงเทพมหานคร #กรุงเทพ #anthem #historicalanthems #nationalanthems #royalanthem #เพลงชาติไทย #เพลงชาติ #เพลงสรรเสริญ #สรรเสริญพระบารมี #เพลงสรรเสริญพระบารมี #southeastasia #thailand #siam #bangkokthailand #bangkok #ราชอาณาจักรไทย #ราชวงค์จักรี #พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว #ในหลวง #วันจักรี #วันนวมินทรมหาราช #Bhumiboladulyadej #kingbhumibol #kingofthailand #ฉันเกิดในรัชกาลที่๙ ----------------------------- 🔔 Like , Share And Subscribe for more national anthems and historical insights , avoid political or hateful commentary.
