National Anthem of India - Jana Gana Mana ---------------------------- Jana Gana Mana (जन गण मन / జన గణ మన) Also known as : "Thou Art the Ruler of the Minds of All People" Lyrics & Music : Rabindranath Tagore, 1911 Original Title : "Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata" (in Bengali) First Sung : December 27, 1911 (Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress) Adopted : January 24, 1950 (De jure by the Constituent Assembly of India) Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem of India. Originally composed in highly Sanskritized Bengali by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, it represents a sacred invocation of pluralism, geography, and unity across the Indian subcontinent. The anthem stands out for its serene, solemn, and unifying character rather than a traditional martial or military tune. History and Origins: took place on December 27, 1911, during the second day of the Calcutta (now Kolkata) Session of the Indian National Congress, where Tagore's niece led a performance. In January 1912, the poem was published as "Bharat Bhagya Bidhata" in the Tattwabodhini Patrika, the official publication of the monotheistic Brahmo Samaj movement, edited by Tagore himself. The melody was composed in the classical Hindustani Raga Alhaiya Bilaval. During a visit to Besant Theosophical College in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, in February 1919, Tagore recited and sang the song for the students. The vice-principal's wife, Margaret Cousins, transcribed the musical notes into Western sheet music notation, ensuring its exact melody was preserved, while Tagore translated the lyrics into English as "The Morning Song of India." The Era of Adoption and Global Recognition: During World War II, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose selected an adaptation of the song ("Subh Sukh Chain") as the national anthem for the Azad Hind (Free India) movement and the Indian National Army (INA). On September 11, 1942, the Radio Hamburg Chamber Orchestra performed the instrumental arrangement of "Jana Gana Mana" for the first time as India's national anthem during the inauguration of the German-Indian Society in Hamburg, Germany. As India approached independence, the Constituent Assembly assembled at midnight on August 14, 1947, closing its historic inaugural session with a solemn performance of "Jana Gana Mana." Later that year, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Indian delegation presented an orchestra recording of the anthem, which was performed to international acclaim before world delegates. Restoration and Official Status: The formal status of the song was cemented on January 24, 1950—just two days before India became a Republic. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad announced to the Constituent Assembly that "Jana Gana Mana" was officially adopted as the National Anthem of India, alongside Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's "Vande Mataram," which was designated as the National Song. Today, "Jana Gana Mana" serves as a foundational pillar of Indian national pride. It is performed at official state functions, educational assemblies, sporting competitions, and national holidays such as Independence Day and Republic Day. It stands as a timeless homage to the geography, people, and unified spirit of India. -------------------------------- #anthem #nationalanthem #nationalanthems #india #bharat #indian #indianarmy #indiananthem #delhi #calculus #mumbai #indiansongs #indianhistory #indiangods #narendramodi #gandhi #nehru #indianindependenceday -------------------------------- 🔔 Like , Share And Subscribe for more national anthems and historical insights , avoid political or hateful commentary.
