ECP – NEWCASTLE STYLE (feat. PREDATOR) | FROM THE VAULT

Another one straight from the ECP vault! 🔥🎤 Back in the day, we were recording out of Selway’s mum’s garage in Kotara. Nothing fancy, just a bunch of young fellas with a passion for hip-hop, making music and representing where we came from. By this stage, ECP was starting to build a name for ourselves around Newcastle, particularly throughout the local neighbourhoods and housing commission areas. Our music was getting around, and people were starting to recognise who we were. One day, we’d just finished laying down a track called NEWCASTLE STYLE. Everything was coming together, but there was one problem. The chorus just wasn’t hitting the way we wanted. That’s when Predator (Abie) came along. At the time, Predator was part of Local Knowledge, one of Newcastle’s most recognised and respected hip-hop crews. He was also in a relationship with Selway’s older sister and happened to be at the house that day. He heard what we were working on, jumped into our little makeshift recording studio and absolutely tore the chorus apart. ONE TAKE! 🎤🔥 I’m pretty sure he nearly blew our microphone and speakers in the process! 😂 And just like that, the track had the energy it was missing. Looking back, having someone from a crew as established and respected as Local Knowledge jump on one of our tracks was a pretty special moment for us young fellas. Predator would go on to become part of Street Warriors alongside his brother Wok, continuing his journey in hip-hop working with artist such as Shannon Noll and Naughty by nature. For us, this track represents a time when ECP was finding its sound, building its reputation and making noise in the Newcastle underground hip-hop scene. No big studios. No expensive equipment. Just a garage, a microphone, raw talent and a whole lot of passion. This was ECP. This was Newcastle.
