In early November, I arrived in Agadir with my bicycle ready for two weeks of adventure across Morocco — from the Atlantic coast and the Anti-Atlas to dusty inland roads and the red streets of Marrakech.
The journey began in Agadir, with mint tea, family hospitality and a climb toward Paradise Valley through olive groves and Berber villages. From there, I crossed the mountains toward the Atlantic, eventually reaching Imsouane after a demanding 78 km ride through heat, argan trees and rugged landscapes.
Following the coast, I continued to Essaouira, a beautiful wind-swept city of white walls, blue shutters and crashing Atlantic waves. Its historic ramparts, markets and artists gave me a chance to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.
Leaving the coast behind, I headed inland toward Sidi L'Mokhtar, Chichaoua and Majjat. The scenery became increasingly dry and remote, with dusty backroads, mud-brick villages, olive and argan trees, shepherds and lively local markets.
The final mountain section brought me to Lalla Takerkoust, where the turquoise lake sits beneath the dramatic Atlas Mountains. After a couple of peaceful days there, I continued toward Marrakech.
The last 38 km took me from quiet rural roads into the busy streets of Marrakech, where I stayed for several days in Gueliz, giving both myself and the bicycle a chance to recover.
This was a journey of mountains, desert roads, Atlantic winds, markets, traditional food and encounters with everyday Morocco — experienced slowly and from the saddle.
And somewhere along the way, I began to miss my children. I found myself looking forward to returning home and sharing the stories, the photographs and the memories.
Because perhaps a journey isn't truly complete until you have someone to share it with.
